Over the weekend I helped my friend stall out at the Alexandra Palace Farmers Market. Under grey clouds and drizzle we set out the Portland Scallop Company stall, trestle tables of bright green plastic crates filled with a cornucopia of fresh Dorset fish, mackerel, brill, gurnard, bass, guilt head bream, cod, scallops, crabs, squid, prawns and crevettes.
With driving sleet and rain trade was slow to start. There was much on offer with produce from the Isle of Wight, cheese from Bath and a stall of the Norfolk collective.
Across the market was a van selling smoked fish and one of my favourite things being smoked cod roe.

Poached cod with roasted tomato and roast garlic sauce from the ‘Tales’ kitchen, cod from The Portland Scallop Company
Having managed to move most of the stock by mid afternoon there were two small fillets of cod left, these would make a fine meal when poached with roasted tomato and roast garlic sauce served with spinach from the wonderful Wild Country stall and a baked potato, oh what bliss on a cold evening in February.

Up in my area! I haven’t been there for a while though – too cold!
Hi Diana, I may be on the Portland Scallop Co. stall again this weekend at Ali Pali so come and say hello if you are around.
